Shakambari pournami

Shakambari Purnima is observed during full moon day, or Pournami, in Pushya maasa.

Who is Shakambari?

shaaka means vegetables ambari – means one who wears

It is said that Goddess Durga appeared as Shakambari after a dry period of hundred years.  She brought forth from her body fruits, flowers, vegetables and herbs to suffice the hunger of the people.

Goddess Shakambari incarnated on  Shakambari Pournami day.  The day also marks the end of the  week long Shakambari Navratri festival which began on Pushya Shudda Astami

Goddess Shakambari is worshipped during the period in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.   We as Madhwas must worship Goddess Shakambari alongwith Maharudradevaru – tadantargatha – Bharatiramana Mukyapranantargatha – Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Devaru.

On Pushya Shukla Chaturdashi we have do the naivedya of vegetables to Banashankari (Parvathi)  and we have to give daana to brahmana – muthaideyaru.  That is why this Vratha is called as “Shakambari Vratha”.

This Vratha is followed for 7 days from Pushya shudda Astami to Pushya p0urnami.  On all these days, different palyas of  vegetables (anishidda) to be prepared.

On the Hunnime day, deepotsava, special pooja and deepa daana to be done.

POURNAMI – ALAKSHMI NAASHA  “ಅಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀನಾಶ”

On Pushyamasa Hunnime day, if it has pushya nakshatra, we must take snaana with lepana of  white sasive on our body and after snaana we must have nutana vastra dharana, we must have the darshana of the mirror, phalapushpa, cow and brahmana.   On this day one must do pooja of Chandra, Indira and Bruhaspathi.
