अजिन दंड कमंडल मेखल रुचिर पावन वामन मूर्तये ।
मित जगत्रितयाय जितारयॆ निगम वाक्पटवे वटवे नम: ।

 ವಾಮನ: ವಾಮಾನಿ ಸುಂದರವಸ್ತೂನಿ ನಯತೀತಿ | वामन: वामानि सुंदरवस्तूनि नयतीति ।
Vishnu is called as “Vamana” as he brings and leads to beatiful objects. 
 
ವಾಮನ: ವಾಮಂ ಶತ್ರುಂ ತಮೋ ನಯತೀತಿ | वामन: वामं शत्रुं तमो नयतीति ।
Vishnu is called as “Vamana” because he sends the enemies to the tamas.
 
ವಾಮನ: ಸೌಂದರ್ಯಂ ವಕ್ರತ್ವಂ ಚ ನಯತೀತಿ | वामन: सौंदर्यं वक्रत्वं च नयतीति ।
Vishnu is called as “Vamana” as he brings beauty as well as the ugliness to the deserving persons
 
ವಾಮಂ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಂ ನಯತಿ ಭಕ್ತಾನಿತಿ ವಾಮನ: | वामं कल्याणं नयति भक्तानिति वामन: |
Srihari is called as Vamana as he brings all auspiciousness to his devotees.
 
ವಾಮನ: ಬಲಿಗಂಧನಾರ್ಥಂ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮಸ್ವರೂಪಧಾರಣಾತ್ | वामन: बलिगंधनार्थं सूक्ष्मस्वरूपधारणात् ।
Vishnu is called as Vamana as he controlled Bali by taking the small roopa and viraata roopa (small roopa of Vamana and Viraat roopa of Trivikrama roopa)

ಕಾಠಕೋಪನಿಷತ್ ಭಾಷ್ಯಂ   काठकोपनिषत् भाष्यं
–  ನಮೋ ಭಗವತೇ ತಸ್ಮೈ ಸರ್ವತ: ಪರಮಾಯ ತೇ |
ಸರ್ವಪ್ರಾಣಿಹೃದಿಸ್ಥಾಯ ವಾಮನಾಯ ನಮೋ ನಮ:||
–  नमो भगवते तस्मै सर्वत: परमाय ते ।
सर्वप्राणिहृदिस्थाय वामनाय नमो नम:॥

We salute Vamana roopi paramathma who has all gunaas unlimited and as such he is sarvottama.  He is there in the hearts of all – सर्वप्राणिहृदिस्थाय and he is the devata for Kathakopanishad.

Vamanavatara is the fifth incarnation of Srihari.
When was Vamana incarnated ?
– Bhadrapada Shudda Dwadashi day in Shravana Nakshatra and in Abhijin Mahoortha.

What made Srihari to incarnate himself as Vamana?

Balichakravarthi in his thrust for power of Devendra, was doing the 100th Ashwamedha yagna.  He had already completed 99 before that.  If he completes the 100th yagna, he would be eligible for the post of Devendra.  The present Indra is Purandara.   When Devataas lost their power to Balichakravarthi, Adithi, the mother of Devataas requested sage Kashyapa to get a son who can bring back the powers to Devataas from Daithyaas.
Kashyapa Rushi told Aditi to do Payovratha for one year, which she did successfully.  As a result of her Jnaana, bhakthi, vairagya, was born Vamana, on Bhadrapada Shudda Dwadashi in Shravana Nakshatra, and Abhijin Muhoortha.  This particular dwadashi is also called as Vijaya Tithi.  Due to the mahimaas of the vratha, Aditi Devi had the boon of Bhagavat darshana, and had the privilege of becoming the mother of Srihari.

How Vamana appeared after his incarnation ?

At the time of birth itself, Vamana was having Chaturbhuja, Shanka, Chakra, Gada, Padma.  He was neelameghashyama and was having Srivatsa Lanchana.  It proves that he is sarvatantra swatantra, he does not have birth.

Vamana – after his incarnation – Aditi-Kashyaparu did the Jatakarma Samskara.  Surya did the Gayatri Mantropadesha.  Bruhaspatyacharyaru gave Yagnopaveeta, kashyaparu gave the “darbe Ududaara”,  Bhoodevi the Krishnajina, Chandra gave Muttugada Danda (palasha).  Aditi gave him koupeena.  Brahma gave Kamandalu, saptarshees gave darbe, saraswathi the aksharamale. , Kubera Bhikshapatre, annapoorne gave the first bhikshe.

Vamana after Upanayana, did the Agnikaarya and after this Vamana went to Balichakravarthi’ s Yagna Shaale in Brukukutsa kshetra, near Narmada River north bank.
Bali Chakravarthy on seeing the Baala Brahmachari Vamana, did the paadapooja of the brahmachari and asked him what he wanted? the land, Gold, Mrustanna? marriage, Elephants, Horses, Chariot, etc?
Vamana just asked him to give three steps of Vamana.   Bali was surprised for having asked that little daana.  Vamana was satisfied with three steps only.   Bali agreed.  Vamana in his first step occupied the entire bhoomandala, and in the second he occupied the sky.   No place was left to place the third.  Asked Bali where shall he keep the third?  Bali replied to put on his head.  That is how Vamana recovered for Devendra all the lost properties from Bali and gave it to Devategalu.

One must note that Bali Chakravarthi was well aware of the roopa of Vamana before granting daana.  His guru Shukracharya advised well in advance about the incarnation of Srihari as Vamana and that he is not an ordinary boy.  Bali is fully aware and fully conscious of the fact and offered the daana.

As per Pancharatragama – Nitya smarana Vidhanam says as follows :-
दधिमध्ये वामनं तु घृते कृष्णं तु संस्मरेत् ।
वाराहं मृत्तिकास्नाने ह्युपेंद्रं वस्त्रधारणे ।
ದಧಿಮಧ್ಯೇ ವಾಮನಂ ತು ಘೃತೇ ಕೃಷ್ಣಂ ತು ಸಂಸ್ಮರೇತ್ |
ವಾರಾಹಂ ಮೃತ್ತಿಕಾಸ್ನಾನೇ ಹ್ಯುಪೇಂದ್ರಂ ವಸ್ತ್ರಧಾರಣೇ |
While churning curd Vamana smarana to be done, while preparing Ghee Krishna smarana to be done; while doing mruttika snaana varaha smarana to be done; while wearing clothes do smarana of Upendra.

अपि वामनो ललितबाल्यवानयं  प्रतिभाबलेन कृतदैत्यकौतुक: ।उपधेरध: कृतबलींद्रशात्रव: स्वजनाय केवलमदात् परं पदं ।
ಅಪಿ ವಾಮನೋ ಲಲಿತಬಾಲ್ಯವಾನಯಂ ಪ್ರತಿಭಾಬಲೇನ ಕೃತದೈತ್ಯಕೌತುಕ: |ಉಪಧೇರಧ: ಕೃತಬಲೀಂದ್ರಶಾತ್ರವ: ಸ್ವಜನಾಯ ಕೇವಲಮದಾತ್ ಪರಂ ಪದಂ |
Srimannarayana took a beautiful roopa as “Vamana”.  By his intelligence, he created wonders for Bali and other daithyaas  By taking three steps as daana, he sent Bali to Rasatala looka and re-established Indra as the King of Swarga.
ಭಗವತ್ಯುದಿತೇ ಸಗೋವಿಲಾಸೇ ವಟುಭಾವಂ ತ್ಯಜತಿ ತ್ರಿವಿಕ್ರಮಾರ್ಯೆ|ಅಪಿ ಭಾನುಪುರ: ಸರಾ: ಸಮಸ್ತಾ: ಪ್ರಯಯು: ಕೀಟಮಣಿಪ್ರಭತ್ವಮಾಶು ||
भगवत्युदिते सगोविलासे वटुभावं त्यजति त्रिविक्रमार्यॆ।अपि भानुपुर: सरा: समस्ता: प्रययु: कीटमणिप्रभत्वमाशु ॥
This shloka brings the mahima of Vamana who was shining and glittering with the rays of sun doing seva to Srihari.  After Bali agreed for giving daana as three steps, Vamana who was in a tiny form took the huge roopa of Trivikrama.  He measured the Universe indicating all belongs to him only, whether it is sun, moon, devataas, and the entire world.

वामन वामन माणववेष दैत्यवरांतक कारण रूप ।
राम भ्रुगुद्वह सूर्जितदीप्ते क्षत्रकुलांतक शंभुवरेण्य ॥
बलिमुखदितिसुतविजयविनाशन जगदवनाजित भव मम शरणं ।
शुभतमकथाशय परमसदोदित जगदेककारण राम रमारमण ॥
ವಾಮನ ವಾಮನ ಭಾಮನ ವಂದೇ ಸಾಮನ ಸೀಮನ ಶಾಮನ ಸಾನೋ |
ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಶಂಧರ ವಂದೇ ಭೂಧರ ವಾರ್ಧರ ಕಂದರಧಾರೀನ್ ||
ವಾಮನ ವಾಮನ ಮಾಣವವೇಷ ದೈತ್ಯವರಾಂತಕ ಕಾರಣ ರೂಪ |
ರಾಮ ಭ್ರುಗುದ್ವಹ ಸೂರ್ಜಿತದೀಪ್ತೇ ಕ್ಷತ್ರಕುಲಾಂತಕ ಶಂಭುವರೇಣ್ಯ ||
ಬಲಿಮುಖದಿತಿಸುತವಿಜಯವಿನಾಶನ ಜಗದವನಾಜಿತ ಭವ ಮಮ ಶರಣಂ |
ಶುಭತಮಕಥಾಶಯ ಪರಮಸದೋದಿತ ಜಗದೇಕಕಾರಣ ರಾಮ ರಮಾರಮಣ ||
Vamana is the bestower of jnana and he is the antaryami for all jeevas.   He is the establisher of all dharmas and the culture.  He only can give us jnaana, bhakti, vairagya.  With Koorma Roopa he lifted and supported the universe.  You also support the pralaya.  He is the the shelter for muktha jeevas.  You can only be attracted by pure devotion and bhakthi.  Through your brahmachari roopi you please with Prahlada, and Bali and took back all the wealth of supreme daithya Bali Chakravarthi.  Vamana took his avatara for fulfilling devakarya, pleased Devendra and other devatas.  Vamana roopi paramathma won over Daithya Bali and saved him and destroyed the victorious daithyas and protected the world.
 
One thing to be noted while calling Bali as daithya – There was a avesha of daithya in Bali.  Infact Bali is haribhaktha.  He has praised Srihari’s vamana roopa, but in the middle due to asuravesha, he did the dwesha of devataas.

यांचामिषादसुरवंचक वामनेश वासिष्ठ कृष्ण मम देहि करावलंबं ।
Yadavaryaru described about Vamanavatara as follows –
–   Srihari took the roopa of Vamana, as a brahmachari child and came to the yajnashala of Balichakravarthi, who had snatched the Devendra’s kingdom.  Vamana wears the “vajra” and he is the destroyer of power.    He is the “Asuravanchaka” – one who deceives the wicked asuras, by asking as daana three steps.  Vamana bestows all Mangala to all satwic souls and as he is vamanesha.   Here one must note that even though Vamana has deceived asuraas by asking the land – one must not forget that he has not told a lie.  The real roopa of Srihari was disclosed by Shukracharya, the guru of Bali, before he could give the daana of land.

शृंगारपादनखतुंगाग्रभिन्न कनकांगांड पातितटिनी-
तुंगातिमंगल तरंगाभिभूत भजकांगांघवामन नम: । ९ ।
Srihari Vaamana is prayed by all the devataas, after he did the nigraha of Bali Chakravarthi

हेमाद्रिशिखराकारं शुद्ध स्फटिक सन्निभं ।
पूर्णचंद्रनिभं देवं द्विभुजं वामनं स्मरेत् ।१।
पद्मासनस्थं देवेशं चंद्रमंडल मध्यगं ।
ज्वलत्कालानलप्रख्यं तडित्कोटि समप्रभं । २ ।
सूर्यकोटि प्रतीकाशं चंद्रकोटि सुशीतलं ।
चंद्रमंडल मध्यस्थं विष्णुमव्यं अच्युतं । ३ ।
श्रीवत्स कौत्सुभोरस्कं दिव्यरत्न विभूषितं ।
पीतांबरं उदारांगं वनमाला विभूषितं । ४ ।
सुंदरं पुंडरीकाक्षं किरीटेन विराजितं ।
षोडशस्त्री परिवृत्तं अप्सरोगणसेवितं । ५ ।
ऋग्यजु:सामाथर्वाद्यौर्गीयमानं जनार्दनं ।
चतुर्मुखाद्यै देवेशै: स्तोत्राराधन तत्परै: । ६ ।
सनकाद्यैर्मुनिगणै: स्तूयमानं अहर्निशं ।
त्रियंबको महादेवो नृत्यते यस्य सन्निधौ । ७ ।
दधिमिश्रान्नकवलं रुक्मपात्रं च दक्षिणे ।
करे तु चिंतयेत् वामे पीयूषं अमलं सुधी । ८ ।
साधकानां प्रयच्छंतं अन्नपानं अनुत्तमं ।
ब्राह्मे मुहूर्ते चोत्थाय ध्यायेद् देवं अधोक्षजं ।९ ।
अतिसुविमलगात्रं रुक्मपात्रस्थमलन्नं
सुललितदधिखंडं पाणिना दक्षिणेन । १० ।
कलशं अमृतपूर्णं वामहस्ते दधानं
तरति सकल दु:खात् वामनं भावयेद्य: । ११ ।
क्षीरं अन्नं अन्नदाता लभेदन्नाद एव च ।
पुरस्तादन्नं आप्नोति पुनरावृत्तिवर्जितं । १२ ।
आयुरारोग्यं ऐश्वर्यं लभते चान्नसंपद: ।
इदं स्तोत्रं पटेद्यस्तु प्रात:काले द्विजोत्तम: ।
अक्लेशादन्न सिद्ध्यर्थं ज्ञानासिद्ध्यर्थमेव च । १३ ।
अभ्रश्याम: शुभ्रयज्ञोपवीती सत्कौपीन: पीतकृष्णाजिनश्री: ।
छत्री दंडी पुंडरीकायताक्ष: पायाद्देवो वामनो ब्रह्मचारी । १४ ।
अजिन दंड कमंडल मेखल रुचिर पावन वामन मूर्तये ।
मित जगत्रितयाय जितारयॆ निगम वाक्पटवे वटवे नम: । १५ ।
श्रीभूमिसहितं दिव्यं मुक्तामणि विभूषितं ।
नमामि वामनं विष्णुं भुक्तिमुक्तिफलप्रदं । १६ ।
वामनो बुद्धिदाता च द्रव्यस्थो वामन: स्मृत:।
वामनस्तारकोभ्याभ्यां वामनाय नमो नम: । १७ ।
॥ इति वामनपुराणे दधिवामनस्तोत्रं संपूर्णं ॥

meaning – Let Srihari who has incarnated as Matsya (fish roopa) to protect us in the waters from fierce acquatic animals.
Srihari who took the avatara as Brahmachaari named vaamana, let him protect us on the land.
Srihari who took the Trivikrama roopa while nigraha of Bali Chakravarti, protect us in the sky.

मायिनं बलिसम्मोहं श्रीनिवासं भजेऽनिशं ।

vaamanaM vaamanaM pUrNakaamaM bhaamanamaaNavaM |
maayinaM balisammOhaM shrInivaasaM bhajE&nishaM |
