Dhanvantari

“ओं धं धन्वंतरिये नम:”   “ఓం ధం ధన్వంతరియే నమ:”  

ನಮಾಮಿ ಧನ್ವಂತರಿಂ ಆದಿದೇವಂ ಸುರಾಸುರೈ: ವಂದಿತ ಪಾದಪದ್ಮಂ |

ಲೋಕೇ ಜರಾರುಗ್ಭಯ ಮೃತ್ಯುನಾಶಂ ಧಾತಾರಂ ಈಶಂ ವಿವಿಧ ಔಷಧೀನಾಂ |

नमामि धन्वंतरिं आदिदेवं सुरासुरै: वंदित पादपद्मं ।

लोके जरारुग्भय मृत्युनाशं धातारं ईशं विविध औषधीनां ।

 

Who is Dhanvantari? – Dhanvantari is the saakshaat paramathma avatara, who appeared during the samudra mathana.   Dhanvantari roopi paramathma appeared carrying Amrutha during samudra mathana.

“ಧನ್ವಂ” + “ಅಂತರಿ” = ಧನ್ವಂತರಿ   “dhanvaM” + “aMtari” = dhanvaMtari;  “धन्वं” + “अंतरि” = धन्वंतरि

DhanvaM – means diseases;  antari – means – destroy.  That is Dhanvantary is the one who destroys all the diseases.   ಧನ್ವಂ– ಕಾಯಿಲೆಗಳು   ಅಂತರಿ – ಧ್ವಂಸ

  • Dhanvantary appeared twice – Once during the churning of ocean “Samudra mathana” where he brought in the “amrutha” – i.e., on Bhadrapada Shukla Dwiteeya

  • Dhanvantary appeared for second time as the son of Dirghatama on Karthika Bahula Dwadashi.   He in turn gave us the Ayurveda samhita with eight divisions.

  • Dhanvantari is said to be the founder of Ayurvedha.

ಧನ್ವಂತರಿ ಮಹಾಮಂತ್ರ  (ತಂತ್ರಸಾರಸಂಗ್ರಹ)

ಸ್ವಯಮುದ್ದೇಶವಾನ್ ಪೂರ್ವವರ್ಣಪೂರ್ವೋ ನಮೋ ಯುತ: |

ಧಾನ್ವಂತರೋ ಮಹಾ ಮಂತ್ರ: ಸಂಸೃತಿವ್ಯಾಧಿನಾಶನ: ||  || ಧಂ ಧನ್ವಂತರಯೇ ನಮ: ||

Chintana of Dhanvantari :

ಚಂದ್ರೌಘಕಾಂತಿಮಮೃತೋರುಕರೈರ್ಜಗಂತಿ ಸಂಜೀವಯಂತಮಮಿತಾತ್ಮಸುಖಂ ಪರೇಶಂ |

ಜ್ಞಾನಂ ಸುಧಾಕಲಶಮೇವ ಚ ಸಂದಧಾನಂ ಶೀತಾಂಶುಮಂಡಲಗತಂ ಸ್ಮರತಾಽತ್ಮಸಂಸ್ಥಂ |

Dhanvantari holds jnaana mudre in one hand, and in the other holds amruta kalasha.  His kaanti is more powerful than the anantachandraa (many chandraas).  With his parama pavitra rays he is filling the power for the entire world.  He is paresha, he is the supreme for Rama brahmaadi devataas also.

ಮೂರ್ಧ್ನಿ ಸ್ಥಿತಾದಮುತ ಏವ ಸುಧಾಂ ಸ್ರವಂತೀಂ ಭ್ರೂಮಧ್ಯಗಾಚ್ಚ ತತ ಏವ ಚ ತಾಲುಸಂಸ್ಥಾತ್ |

ಹಾರ್ದಾಚ್ಚ ನಾಭಿಸದನಾದಧರಾಸ್ಥಿತಾಚ್ಚ ಧ್ಯಾತ್ವಾಽಭಿಪೂರಿತತನುರ್ದುರಿತಂ ನಿಹನ್ಯಾತ್ |

One must do the anusandhaana that the amruthadhaare which is flowing from Dhanvantari murthy is falling on all the parts of our body, viz., our head, between eye brows, on the tongue, on the heart, on the chest, etc.  One who does the chintana will be far from all the hurdles.

ಅಜ್ಞಾನ ದು:ಖ ಭಯ ರೋಗ ಮಹಾವಿಷಾಣಿ ಯೋಗೋಽಯಮಾಶು ವಿನಿಹಂತಿ ಸುಖಂ ಚ ದದ್ಯಾತ್ |
ಉನ್ಮಾದವಿಭ್ರಮಹರ: ಪರತಶ್ಚ ಸಾಂದ್ರ ಸ್ವಾನಂದಮೇವೆ ಪದಮಾಪಯತಿ ಸ್ಮ ನಿತ್ಯಂ |

This mantra removes ajnaana, duKa, our fears, all deseases, dangerous poisons,  This also removes our mental diseases and gives the paramasuKa in the end.

ಧ್ಯಾತ್ವೈವ ಹಸ್ತತಲಗಂ ಸ್ವಮೃತಂ ಸ್ರವಂತಂ ದೇವಂ ಸ ಯಸ್ಯ ಶಿರಸಿ ಸ್ವಕರಂ ನಿಧಾಯ |

ಆವರ್ತಯೇನ್ಮನುಮಿಮಂ ಸ ಚ ವೀತರೋಗ: ಪಾಪಾದಪೈತಿ ಮನಸಾ ಯದಿ ಭಕ್ತಿ ನಮ್ರ: |

One who does the Dhanvantari Mahamantra japa, if he keeps his hands on the other by remembering Dhanvantari bhagavan, doing the chanting of Dhanvantri Maha mantra, he will be free from all diseases.  But this is applicable if he is a bhagavad bhakta, and he must have shraddha.

ಧನ್ವಂತರೇಽಗರುಚಿ ಧನ್ವಂತರೇಽರಿತರು ಧನ್ವಂಸ್ತರಿ ಭವಸುಧಾ-
ಭಾನ್ವಂತರಾವಸಥ ಮನ್ವಂತರಾಧಿಕೃತ ತನ್ವಂತರೌಷಧನಿಧೇ |
ಧನ್ವಂತರಂಗ ಶುಗು ಧನ್ವಂತಮಾಜಿಷು ವಿತನ್ವನ್ಮಮಾಬ್ಧಿತನಯಾ-
ಸೂನ್ವಂತಕಾತ್ಮ ಹೃದ ತನ್ವಂತರಾವಯವ ತನ್ವಂತರಾತ್ರಿ ಜಲಧೌ ||

धन्वंतरेऽगरुचि धन्वंतरेऽरितरु धन्वंस्तरि भवसुधा-
भान्वंतरावसथ मन्वंतराधिकृत तन्वंतरौषधनिधे ।
धन्वंतरंग शुगु धन्वंतमाजिषु वितन्वन्ममाब्धितनया
सून्वंतकात्म हृद तन्वंतरावयव तन्वंतरात्रि जलधौ ॥

ತತೋ ಭವಾನ್ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಬಾಹುನಾ ಸುಧಾಕಮಂಡಲುಂ ಕಲಶಂ ಚಾಪರೇಣ | ಪ್ರಗೃಹ್ಯ ತಸ್ಮಾನ್ನಿರಗಾತ್ ಸಮುದ್ರಾತ್ ಧನ್ವಂತರಿರ್ನಾಮ ಹರಿನ್ಮಣಿದ್ಯುತಿ: |

ततो भवान् दक्षिणबाहुना सुधा कमंडलुं कलशं चापरेण । प्रगृह्य तस्मान्निरगात् समुद्रात् धन्वंतरिर्नाम हरिन्मणिद्युति: ।

tatO bhavaan dakShiNabaahunaa sudhaa- kamaMDaluM kalashaM chaaparENa | pragRuhya tasmaanniragaat samudraat dhanvaMtarirnaama harinmaNidyuti: |

Dhanvantary roopi paramathma’s teachings are available in Agni purana.  His avatara is also explained in Vishnu purana,  Ramayana, Bhagavatam, MBTN, Brahmanda purana, etc.

अमृतापूर्णकलशं बिभ्रद् वलयभूषितं । स वै भगवत: साक्षाद् विष्णोरंशांशसंभव: । धन्वंतरिरिति ख्यात आयुर्वेददृगिज्यभाक् | तमालोक्यासुरा: सर्वे कलशं चामृताभृतं ।

–  During the churning of the Samudra, a handsome purusha came.  He was broadshouldered.  He was tall,  his eyes were reddish, the colour of his skin resembled the cloud; was decorated with ornaments in all parts of his body;  had garlend.  dressed with peetambara.  Had his ears filled with karnabharana, had black and curly hair.  His step resembled that of a lion.  He was carrying the amruta kalasha in his hands.  He is the swaroopansha of Srihari.  He is the mukya drastara of Ayurveda shastra.  He had special ahuti in yajna.

धन्वंतरि वेद मंत्र – ಧನ್ವಂತರಿ ವೇದ ಮಂತ್ರ –

अयं मे हस्तो भगवान् अयं मे भगवत्तर: । अयं मे विश्वभेषजोऽयं शिवाभिमर्शन: । ऋग्वेद । ಅಯಂ ಮೇ ಹಸ್ತೋ ಭಗವಾನ್ ಅಯಂ ಮೇ ಭಗವತ್ತರ: | ಅಯಂ ಮೇ ವಿಶ್ವಭೇಷಜೋಽಯಂ ಶಿವಾಭಿಮರ್ಶನ: | ಋಗ್ವೇದ |

Daithyaas snatched the amruta kalasha from Dhanvantary – Clarification –  As per Bhagavatam – it seems that the daithyaas snatched the amruta kalasha from the hands of Sarvottama Srihari easily.  Now, one will get doubt as to whether Dhanvantary was not having the ability to avoid snatching of the kalasha.    It is not so.  Infact srihari knows that the daithyas are not eligible.  But still he told them that he will distribute.  But they didnot had that much of patience till the receipt of the amrutha.  Actually as per the agreement between the gods and daithyas the amrutha should have been shared equally.  But these daithyas snatched it with the sole intention of retaining with them only.  As such Srihari wanted to make the world understand that the daithyas do not deserve the amrutha.  So, he allowed them snatching the kalasha.
